As I said in the winter essentials post, it's time to begin wardrobe reorganisation/renovation for the later months and where better to start than the chinos which have taken over the legs of males the world over.
Chinos, however, are a summer classic for a reason; their light weight is great for comfort in the summer, but when the temperature dips to around or below 10°C (50°F), its time to start finding alternatives.
Corduroys
Let's make this clear straight away: cords aren't simply the reserve of the elbow-patch wearing geography teacher. Honest. I like to think of them as 'winter chinos'; smarter than jeans, more casual than woolen trousers.
It's especially important that the cords are slim fit if you want to replace your chinos with a pair, otherwise they'll look as though they've been borrowed from your dad. The pair above, by AMI, are beautiful, if obscenely expensive; a greatwinter colour and a slim enough fit to retain a contemporary edge.
If you really can't bear to move away from the chinos, though, click past the jump...
And some winter-friendly chinos...
Yes, yes, I know... I'm supposed to be trying to steer people away from their chinos into something more appropriate, but I couldn't bring myself to stay away from my chinos for the entire season...
Luckily, I bought some chinos from April77 in the "DAD" fit. With thicker fabric than most high-street chinos, and infinitely better quality than anything I've touched in Topman, I knew I was on to a winner.
Mine are beige, but I think navy is the colour to have, but make sure you order two inches down; I'm a 30" waist for almost every company and ordered these in a 29, which are slightly big. Luckily with the fit of these, they look almost as fantastic if they're a tiny bit loose at the top as well, which was a nice surprise.
These chinos are so nice I feel slightly uncomfortable telling people about them, only because I can't stand the thought of someone else having something so delightful.
