Things I Love: Bill Amberg Rucksack.

Rucksacks. I've never been a fan of them myself, having always used a messenger bag because I thought they provided a little more class than the rucksacks, which, as a child I associated with those children who sat at the front of class and wore their trousers 4 or 5 inches too high and now associate with the adults these children almost invariably become. These are the people who go "backpacking" along mountain paths to pass the time while they wait for death the put them out of their perpetual misery. You know the type, when the sun comes out, so do the socks and sandals; those poor, misguided souls.

Leather specialist Bill Amberg, however, clearly sees the merits of the rucksack and his new Hunter model is opening my eyes to them too. The beautiful vegetable tanned leather bag redefines my preconception about rucksacks being little more than utilitarian items, looking fantastic in the black leather too; I certainly wouldn't be embarassed to use one.

Unfortunately, £335 is a rather hefty investment to be making on a rucksack and so I went on the search for an alternative bag, finding two which managed to fit the (now considerably smaller) bill.

I've posted some rather more wallet-friendly alternatives after the jump...

The budget alternative (left) at £35 is ASOS' own brand with leather-look trim, while for those who are slightly more willing to spend, there is Sandqvist's offering (right, at £125), which may not be as mesmerisic as Bill Amberg's all-leather version, but is a wonderful bag in it's own right with some rather fetching real leather trim and a real air of class to it I wouldn't have previously expected from such a bag. Now, where are my socks and sandals?
