The Royal Wedding: Who Really Cares?

So, Prince William is soon to wed Kate Middleton - recently voted the 3rd most attractive royal (I've included a picture so you can judge for yourselves) and seen by many as the natural successor to Diana - and I'm happy for them.

As you will have guessed from the title, however, I am struggling to congratulate them with any real conviction. This evening I  found myself wandering around my local shopping centre and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't evade memorabilia for this month's Royal Wedding.

It's not a case of having a problem with the extraordinary level of publicity the couple have received, I think it's great; the monarchy are a national treasure and although there is little logical explanation behind my support of them, I would not get rid of them.

My problem, though, is that I can find no reason to care about the event; certainly not enough to consider investing any money in items with the Prince and his fiancée's faces engraved on them.

H Samuel, much to my dismay, disagree with me and seem to think we do need such goods in our lives to celebrate a wedding which will have an effect on our lives so small even the word 'negligible' would seem to be a wild over-exaggeration.
David Cameron, though, has come out with the idea which bothers me most, telling the British public to hold celebratory street parties. Honestly, Mr Cameron? Street parties? I wouldn't ruin a good party, on what is looking like being a beautiful 4 day birthday weekend for myself, by mentioning the Prince and his missus' special day. Why? Because it doesn't matter. It's an irrelevance; the only people who care about it are the relatives, those who can make money from it or those who have little else in their empty lives to look forward to, needing to look to others for their happiness.

As a student, I have friends who will look for ANY reason to party, but if somebody mentions this wedding when they invite me I will not only refuse to attend, but I will be forced (yes, forced) to either slap them or erase them from my life.

Luckily, I am certain the people I respect enough to befriend would never do something so ridiculous and nor should you.
